March 12, 2019. Lisa Kehl from the UHawaii Manoa’s Public Health department used SAGE2 to manage her PH 301 Issues in Public Health (Tobacco & Your Community: Addressing Disparities Among Local Populations) class.
The class’s 12 students discussed the barriers smokers face when they want to quit smoking. They were asked in advance to take pictures that they thought would provide an aspect of the issue and explain why it is a problem, why it is happening, what can be done to stop it, and how the picture can be used for advocacy. The students were not familiar with SAGE2 (or the classroom) and spent the first 20 minutes or so practicing moving windows around, using a pointer, and sharing their screen. It seemed that screen sharing might not be a good way to use the wall, so they were asked to share individual images. Initially, there were too many images shared to the screen and the system crashed and had to be restarted. The group was unphased by this and continued with the specific questions they had been assigned. They uploaded approximately 14 images to the wall. The instructor went to every person that had something to present – they enlarged their image and read their narrative answer. Very quickly, some of the students who had figured out how to manage windows on SAGE2 helped the students who hadn’t, and controlled resizing and placement for them. After a few presentations, the instructor asked the students to start thinking of themes in some of these pictures, place Quick Notes on the wall, and colocate related pictures. The final screen capture was saved and downloaded for further discussion for the next class. (Sadly, that class will not be in SAGE2, but they wanted it to be.)
